If you are Lord of the Rings fans like my husband and I you may be considering going to see The Hobbit while it's in theaters. Let me save you $20 and say don't bother, just wait until it comes out on DVD. It is by far the worst of all 5 movies so far. Here's our break down (without giving away too many details)
First of all the entire movie there were so many different stories being developed or at least trying to be developed it didn't give viewers long enough to really get emotionally attached or invested in any of the stories. A mystery starts to be shown, then off we go to learn about a budding romance, but before the romance can get past eye flirts the scene changes again to a battle somewhere, then back to an escape, then a weird off shoot story that comes out of no where, back to the romance that now seems more developed than the viewers ever saw happen, then to multiple battles at the same time.
The entire movie was all over the place like this.
There were a few scenes that were built up so much we thought they were going to be a part of the story, only to have the characters move on as if nothing had happened.
With the first 3 lord of the rings movies being 3 books made into 3 movies, now they are taking 1 book- The Hobbit and making it into 3 movies. They obvious stretch for content is apparent.
My husband (who has read all the books) was upset most of the movie for things that weren't in the book, or how it was in the book. I understand some changes may be necessary, but some were just completely random and pulled from thin air.
By the end of this movie we looked at each other and thought what a waste of time it was. There wasn't enough of any one story in the movie to feel like we had a viewers connection or any type desire to know more because none of the stories had developed to that point. It was just a collection of 15 different stories making up a 2 1/2 hour movie.
Hopefully the last movie will wrap everything up and be much better. Otherwise we'll just stick to our Lord of the Rings trilogy.
