It was finally time to make a new tree skirt seeing how I've used the same one for 13 years now. So here's a easy to follow tutorial on how to make a tree skirt-
The majority of the work is cutting out your circle. It's all about folding your fabric. Once again, I used a sheet because you just can't beat the amount of fabric for the price.
Fold your fabric in half. Then take the open ends and match them up folding it again. Now take one of the corners of folded ends and it will be your center. Fold the open ends on an angle to create a pie shape like below.
The open ends will be angled and uneven. That's ok. Now measure from the top corner (what will be the middle of the circle) to the size you want the tree skirt to be. For mine I just eyeballed it, but if you want to be exact then measure from your tree out how far you'd like the skirt to lay and that's your measurement.
Next start cutting- A trick my mom taught me was to fold the fabric over itself as you're cutting to keep a straight line. Just use the corner as your reference as you go.
You can see that you'll be cutting a slightly angled line so don't worry about following the edges. If you're really worried about cutting it perfect here you can keep folding the fabric until there's less area to cut.
Next cut the tip off so you will have an opening in the center to go around the tree. Then cut along one of the folds so you have an opening in your circle to be able to wrap the tree skirt around the tree.
Now the hardest part is over. How complicated you make the rest is completely up to you. I enjoy sewing so it's not intimidating or hard for me, but if you are not a sewer you can do the rest with a hot glue gun, or even iron on tape to give it more of a flat look.
But for mine I used my sewing machine. I first turned under the edge and sewed the fold and center of the skirt that I had cut for an opening so it wouldn't fray.
Then I sewed a gathering stitch along the top of some lace I had and sewed it onto the bottom of the skirt with a little bit of a ruffle. I wanted it to be pretty simple to go along with this year's theme, yet stylish enough that I could use it in future years. Plus the only part that will show really is the ruffle since presents will sit on the other parts so no need to go all multiple ruffle fancy in my opinion.
That's it!
