Since we've chosen to decorate our Christmas tree this year with all homemade decorations I was so excited to try making these ornaments! They were REALLY easy! The kids helped out and they added so much charm to our tree. The thing I like best about this recipe is you don't have to paint the ornaments. (you CAN, but you don't have to) I made one batch white and one batch red- well it turned out more pink.
Here's how you make them-
In a sauce pan combine and heat:
1 c. baking soda
1/2 c. corn starch
3/4 c. water
coloring (optional)
mix well and cook until it starts to thicken. (like mashed potatoes)
Remove from heat and let cool with a wet towel covering it so it doesn't dry out.
Once it's cool, roll it out like sugar cookie dough - if it's too sticky add more cornstarch, if it's too dry wet your hands (that option is a little more messy) and use cookie cutters to cut out your ornaments. Use a straw to make the holes for the ribbon to hang them from.
I went over the dough with one of my stamping rollers to give them a fun snowflake texture but this is optional.
Once you have all the ornaments cut out place them on a cookie sheet with either waxed paper or tinfoil and bake at 175 for 1 hour.
Then thread a ribbon through them and hang them up on the tree!
I'll be posting a picture of our tree with homemade decorations once we get a few more things on it.
