Science Fair Project- Density

My daughter wanted to do her science fair project on density this year.  So we pulled up good old pinterest and got to work!  After one failed attempt this is what we came up with.  Why is it things rarely turn out looking as good as they do in movies/magazines/pinterest? haha at least sometimes they don't, and this was one of those times.
Our first attempt included: Honey, rubbing alcohol, water, dish soap, and olive oil
We colored everything hoping that would make the levels more defined.  Bad idea.  The result was everything too dark to determine where one started and the other one ended.  Plus we discovered trying to color olive oil with water based food coloring didn't work and just created a yellow with blue dots look.  It was a great learning experiment for my daughter though!
Here's what the first try looked like:
Some separation can be seen, but not as drastic as we wanted (or as the pinterest ones showed!)

So our second go we used: olive oil, dish soap, water, olive oil, milk, corn syrup, and maple syrup
This time the only things we colored were the milk & water.
You can see the separation more easily with this one- although the milk & water did mix together a little.

It seemed to be the liquids with the higher sugar content were the most dense.
