Custom Bookcase

When we moved into this house my in-laws had left a wall of cabinets.  At first we thought they'd be great because they'd hide all our books and look neat and clean, but then the cabinet doors started to break and come off (made from cheap pressed particle wood)  The doors were unfix-able as the wood was literally crumbling where they broke at the hinges.  So it was time to come up with another solution!
Since the bookcases we want are out of our budget right now we used some plastic shelving we already had until we can save up for the sturdy nice bookcases we (mostly I) want.
We were worried that the books showing would make it seem more cluttered than the cabinets- but it didn't!

One trick I did was to take black fabric and glue it to the sides and the back of the plastic shelves so it would encase them more and give more of a bookcase feel.

I really like the fabric on the sides and back! From the hallway or the other rooms you can't see all the books- just the black fabric.  You could also do this with cute fabric that matches your decor.  It'd be way cute in a kids room.
