It came to my attention last week that I didn't have a Christmas themed wreath for my front door! That had to be fixed STAT. So after searching through Pinterest for inspiration I came up with a great idea how to make my own star non-wreath (a wreath but not a wreath). It was pretty easy, and cost me less than $5. Here's how I made it-
You will need:
large craft Popsicle sticks- about 18 of them
scrap fabric- I'd say about 1/2 a yard
glue gun
sign
vinyl sayings or marker to write
I got some large Popsicle sticks at the store. I've seen them at the dollar store in packs but I was already at Walmart so I got a pack of about 75 for $2.50
I also picked up the small chalkboard sign for $2, I wasn't able to find them online for the same price so it may be something that's only available in the store at that price.
First lay out your sticks and make the shape you want- making sure to overlap the ends because that's where you'll hot glue them together.
Carefully glue the ends together. I found the easiest way to do this was to glue the sticks that were on top at both ends, then once I had those all glued it was easier to glue the rest.
The next step is to stabilize the star by gluing more sticks on the inside. Make sure you don't glue any outside the outer line that will affect your star shape.
Next glue a few more to stabilize the middle. Don't worry about what it looks like- the sticks will be covered anyway- you just want the outside shape.
Now take your fabric and cut a 1-2 inch notch then rip the length of the fabric (this gives it the rag look). Glue one end to the star and wrap the fabric around gluing as necessary. I just wrapped the fabric where it wanted to go- no rhyme, reason or pattern. Eventually the entire star will be covered so don't worry about where it's going at first.
I found that starting the fabric at one of the points helped get those covered easier.
Keep ripping fabric and wrapping/gluing it onto the star until everything is as covered as you want it to be.
For the sign, I cut out some subway style Christmas sayings and a Nativity and pieced it together myself. A lot of the sayings cut out too small and weren't usable so it didn't quite turn out how it was supposed to- but it works.
