How to sew a maxi skirt and pillowcase dress

After going through some unneeded sheet sets I came across one that was made of t-shirt like material and realized how perfect it would be for a maxi pillowcase dress and maxi skirt for my girls and I!  Here's how to sew a maxi skirt and maxi pillow case dress- seriously they are SOO easy!!
Sadly I didn't take pictures of the step by step process because I wasn't sure how they would turn out, but they turned out so cute and were so easy to make anyone can do it!

I'll draw some graphics that hopefully will make sense.  The length of the skirt can be however you want it- traditionally maxi skirts go to almost the floor so keep that in mind when measuring.

Basically you measure and cut out the fabric as shown- I did an example of a 20" waist, but just adjust that to whatever your measurement is.

Once you have it cut out, simply sew the sides of the skirt together.  Sew the waistband ends together so it makes a circle.  Folding it in half sew the open end to the top of your skirt.

Because the waistband was cut with the stretch going sideways it will act as your elastic (but more comfortably)
Oh and bonus- if you cut out the skirt with the bottom as the already hemmed part of the sheet then you don't have to hem it!

And there you have a maxi skirt!!

For the pillowcase dress-
I used the actual pillowcase from this sheet set, but of course you can just cut out fabric and sew the sides together too.  Again, let the open end/hem of the pillowcase be the bottom of the dress and you don't have to hem it!  (I added a strip of matching ribbon at the bottom to cover up the wide hem line)

Once you have the closed end of the pillow case cut off for the arms and neck (I usually have to trim 4-6 inches from the folded end so it's the right length for my 2 year old)  Fold over the edge and sew all along where the arms and neck will be so there are no raw edges.

Next turn down the top sections about an inch (or wide enough for your ribbon) and sew each of them.  Because of the angle it wont line up on the edges, that's ok because your ribbon is going to gather it anyway.

You can use one ribbon and tie it on one side like I did, or you can use two ribbons and have it tie on both sides.  (one ribbon for the front and one for the back)

There's your easy pillowcase dress!!  I plan on making more of these they were so easy!!
