Watermelon Carving

Another Pinterest experiment.  I had a potluck to go to and since them theme was kabob's I thought this hedgehog watermelon would be perfect!
For being my first creative watermelon cutting experience I think it went ok.  Up until this point, cutting a watermelon meant slices for my kids.  So this was a fun experiment.

First I cut a hole in the top, then sectioned out the watermelon from the inside.  I was going to make them nice balls with my scoop but realized I should work on one skill at a time!  Once the insides were scooped out, I laid some wadded newspaper inside (so the cut watermelon would stick up) and then placed a couple of paper towels on top of the news paper.  Then I cut out a nose and feet from the section of watermelon that I had cut out.  Using toothpicks I attached the feet and nose.  Then also using toothpicks I attached blueberries for the eyes & nose.
Then I filled in the back with the cut sections of watermelon and placed toothpicks in them.

It didn't turn out as cute as the one I saw on pinterest.... but it was still fun and the people at the potluck were impressed!
