New Curtains

They're finally finished! The new curtains for our house.  These were one of the easiest curtains I've ever made.  They're reversible, and you can make them with any style of edge you like (I chose to do points).  Here's the before & after pictures and instructions:
Before:

These were the curtains when we moved in.  Although better than nothing, the country and western 80's is not my style.  This had to be fixed asap!
I came across this pattern on Pinterest.  It looked so easy I knew I didn't need the pattern to make it.

You can see all the different types of edges you can make.  I love them all!

Here's one window with both styles up so you can see the difference.  These 2 windows are on another wall so I did the reverse pattern and had the solid color on top for just these 2 windows.

Both windows with the new curtains.

Now, here's how to make these curtains.  These are so easy even the beginner sewer can make them.  If you can sew a pillow case, you can make these!

Once you have your coordinating fabrics, measure the width of the curtain rod (not the window) where they will hang.  Because these aren't gathered there's not a lot of room for error here.  Once you have that width cut the fabrics to that width by folding each in half first.  Since basically these curtains will just be hung over the curtain rod your basically just sewing the two fabrics together and that's it- no extra seams or anything.

Now choose what kind of design you want along the bottom of the curtain.  I chose to have points, but you could do squared edges, a fancy edge, scalloped, whatever you want.  To make my pattern equal I folded the curtains (so that there is a fold on the top and one on the side) to the width that I wanted the pattern to repeat then cut the bottom into points.  This will make it so that the bottom design of the curtain will be equal on both sides.

You now have something that looks like this with a fold at the top.  If you opened it at the fold it would be a big square with the edging you've cut off on 2 ends.
**If you are making more than one curtain you'll want to use this first one as a pattern and cut out all other windows at the same time so that all your bottom designs match.**

Next you open up the fabric and place right sides together.  Sew around the outside edges of the entire fabric leaving a 6" hole to turn it right side out.  (If you have any curves or points you may need to snip or trip them a little so the fabric will lay flat once it's turned right side out)

Once the fabric is turned right side out sew up the 6" hole and you're done!! Just lay the fabric over your curtain rod, let the front side hang slightly higher than the back so both patterns show.  You now have reversible curtains.  Easy right?!?!

  3. Your new curtains looks amazing, Jodee. I commend you for the effort you put into making these curtains. Having a well-designed curtain is a good way of beautifying one's house while having the convenience of a dim room. Thanks for sharing, and I hope you make more projects like this.

  4. Thanks Roxie! Curtains are one of the first things I usually make and put up in a new house- it's such a drastic change for the entire room.
