Wreck It Ralph Birthday Party

Let me just start by saying that a birthday party while in the middle of a move (literally 12 days before moving) was not fun!!  Not only was the house in chaos before/after that can only be cleaned so much because boxes and packing make messes, but I didn't have the time to do a lot of the cute extra stuff I normally would have done for a Wreck It Ralph birthday party.  So here is what we did do, and a few of the ideas I would have liked to have done.
As the kids were arriving we started them playing a game of "Ralph, Ralph, Felix"- you guessed it, basically duck, duck, goose with a little name change.  The kids loved this game and it kept them busy while other kids arrived.

Once everyone had arrived we started making our candy racing cars-  I got bowls of lots of different candy set out on a table, gave each kid a paper plate and the frosting/glue. (some were colored and some were white)
For the frosting-
1 bag powdered sugar
1 t. cream of tartar
enough water to make it a smooth and slightly runny consistency
(this frosting will set hard)
(the one pictured above is what my 5 year old made- so not too hard!)

We found that using ice cream cones worked the best as a base for the car body.  We had the following candy and decorations available: Reese's peanut butter cups, rainbow licorice, jelly beans, Reese's Peices, salt water taffy, sour squares, crabby patties, sugar cones, cake cones, and graham crackers.
Some kids got creative and made candy mountains instead, and some just did their own original creation.

Afterwards we gave each kid a mini bottle of coke & some Mentos and we made our own coke volcanoes.
Since there wasn't very much coke in each bottles they didn't spray too high (a 2 liter bottle would spray higher)  But it was still fun for the kids to see and each be able to do their own.

Then we had the kids race using 2 cardboard boxes we had folded so that the top and bottom would be open, then spray painted them & added yellow circles for headlights and paper plates for wheels.  This was one thing I wish I had more time to do- the idea was so cute but I didn't have time to make the box cars look very cute, and the plates came off almost as soon as we started using them.

At any rate, we then had the kids hold the box up as they raced each other. The winner got a gold medal (something I found in the party section of Walmart)

For the party favors I got a small cello envelope (they are 1"x 8" ordered from ebay) and filled it with skittles, stapled a Wreck It Ralph sticker on the top, and also gave them a swirly straw.

One thing I wanted to do but ran out of time to make was "Bug Killers" using these glow sticks, I was going to make a cute little label for each one, but ran out of time.

  1. This looks awesome! I wanted to ask you, how high did the coke spray? Did you give them just one mentos or did they put a few in the bottle and move back? Was it high enough that they had to run back? Just wanted to know how messy this gets. Thanks!

  2. It depends on how many mentos they dropped in, it sprays pretty instantly so I don't think they had time for more than 2, 3 if they were quick and lucky.
For the little bottles of coke it sprayed probably about 2 feet above the bottle at the most.

If you are doing 2 liter's I bet it would go a lot higher, or even the 20 oz bottles.

It is pretty messy- which is why we did ours in the road! Lucky for us we lived on a low traffic street. :)
    Best of luck!

    1. Thanks for the info! I was going to try having a diet cola springs where the kids threw mentos into a bowl of somesort, but realized that they probably wouldn't see that big reaction that you get by putting them into the bottle of coke. I came across your link and then I thought of doing the smaller bottles, but we're having so many kids over that I don't think it's worthwhile (very costly) to have them use it as a game. If it were a handful of kids I would definitely go for it, but it's going to be too much. Instead we're going to put on a little show for the kids with a few 2L bottles. Hopefully they enjoy it, without getting too worked up about wanting to do it themselves... :) We'll see how it goes.

      Thanks again :)

    2. Sounds like a fun party!
Depending on how many kids you have coming- I was able to get these mini bottles in packs of 8 for about $3, so it wasn't too bad cost wise.
You can always get a couple of the 2ltr bottles or even a few more of the 20 oz ones and divide the kids up into groups- have them do an obstacle course or something where one team member puts the mento in the soda at the end.

Another fun game I've thought of since was to get a poster and give each kid a sucker (flat ones if you can find them) let them lick their sucker then stick it to the poster and see who's stays on the longest.
