Free samples become emergency rations

Every time you get fast food you get ketchup or other sauce packets right? Normally we would use what we needed and trash the rest without a second thought.  A couple years ago my husband and I talked about how we could use these free samples as emergency rations for 72 hour kits or food storage instead of throwing them away.
So I pulled out an empty Tupperware modular mate to store them in and we started putting all these free samples inside instead of throwing them away.  The cool part about it is these are shelf stable and have a fairly long shelf life which is great for us because we really don't eat fast food very often.  But you'd be surprised how quickly these samples add up when you stop throwing them away.

We found ourselves getting excited when it was a really good sauce we liked because it would broaden our collection.  On thing we did learn was that some items will seep their smell such as parmesan cheese packets from pizza places.  So those we put in a separate ziploc bag inside the box.

Believe it or not these have already come in handy!  There's been a time or two that we've run out of soy sauce for example and I don't know about you but rice just isn't the same without some soy sauce.  We were able to pull a couple packets out and use those.

Camping, picnics, sack lunches all no longer needed a large (even the mini ones are larger than these samples) container of sauce.  And you don't have to worry about bringing home the container either.

  2. The hot sauce packets will go bad in about a year, depending on where they are from and how long they had them. The packet will "rot" or start to separate and ingredients will leach out. Just a heads up. :) We had a few hot sauce packets do that and it got all over the other packets. So we ended up throwing it all away. But they do come in handy! We save them for camping and toss in a baggie to put in the trailer or picnic basket. It's been great!
